Irene Fafaliou

Dr Irene Fafaliou is Professor in Enterprises and Small & Medium Business Support Policies at the Economics Department of the University of Piraeus.

She holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Leicester University (UK) and a graduate degree in Manpower Studies & Industrial Relations from the University of Manchester (UK). She received her Bachelor degree in Business Administration from the University of Macedonia, Thessaloniki (GR).

She has extensive teaching experience at universities in Greece and abroad. She has also large experience in e-learning and distance learning educational programs. From 2013 to 2015 she served as a module coordinator of Business Administration at the Hellenic Open University. Currently she also acts as the Director of the Entrepreneurship, Technology and Economic Strategy Laboratory which aims to design and implement innovative and creative actions in the field of entrepreneurship, technology and business strategy through collaborations with institutions in Greece and abroad.

Much of her research is focused on the links between firms and markets, the competitiveness of the Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, on Social & Innovative Entrepreneurship, and on Innovation Management and Technology Transfer.

She has worked as a technical consultant with various institutions and as a researcher has contributed to the elaboration of a large number of studies, funded by the European Observatory for SMEs, the European Union, and the General Secretariat for Research and Technology, the National Institute of Labour, the National Confederation of Greek Commerce etc.

She has published a considerable number of articles in prestigious international journals and co-authored or co-edited a number of university textbooks. She has numerous publications in Greek and international collective volumes and in proceedings of international conferences.

She is a member of the Board of the non-profit Organization ‘Future leaders’, member of the National Board for the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) and founding member of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Unit of the University of Piraeus. She is also member of the Business Mentors Network and mentor for startup firms in the Ekinisi Lab of the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises and Industries (SEV).
